G1 Finishes Latina Christiana!

Well, we're supposed to be a classical homeschool, but I never talk about Latin study. So, I'll tell you, it was too much for us at one point to do Latin. This year, as a seventh grader, G1 reviewed and resumed Latin study with such success!

It was the right time to
pursue Latin study for him.

He thoroughly enjoyed it this time.  No prodding from the parents was necessary.  He used a block of time on Mondays for Latin, French and Logic.  Mondays go so smoothly this school year, and I'm glad of it.  I'm also glad that he will work with the Daddy on his Latin because it helps the Daddy review what he was taught.

SOTW3 Chapter 22 Revolution!

Begins on page 209
Revolution!
Discontent in the British Colonies & The American Revolution

Narrate from
M. B. Synge. Struggle for Sea Power

"Declaration of Independence" pages from American Revolution Hands on History at Scholastic
Everyone played the Bunker Hill game from the SOTW3 Activity Guide [Whether on not they liked it]

History took place this week under duress b/c there were so many other things to do besides study our country's fight for independence.  But, from the Mommy, history study did take place. We will continue to use these same sources for history next week, but add in more Liberty's Kids episodes.

Each G has read the pages about those who signed the Declaration in For You They Signed, by Marilyn Boyer who my husband got to hear at an ICHE conference several years ago.

SOTW3 Chapter 21 Fighting Over North America

The boys and I have read the Henty book about this time period in North America called True to the Old Flag and found this chapter very interesting to discuss and even debate about for history.

Enjoying Art

What a difference it makes when the Mommy gets the correct materials to use for art. Above is G3's beautiful attempt with oil pastels. Below is his masterpiece with the chalk according to directions in A Simple Start in Chalk Pastels.

SOTW3CH20 Logic Stage (Classical?) History Study

CHAPTER 20:  THE IMPERIAL EAST

Emperor Chi'en-lung's Library

DIRECTION TO MY 3Gs WAS TO READ THESE LITTLE KID BOOKS OR NOT GET SCREEN TIME DURING THE SCHOOL WEEK.  They read these books.
Ms. Frizzle's Adventures: Imperial China
George Washington by Ingri d'Aulaire, Edgar Parin d'Aulaire
Water Buffalo Days: Growing Up in Vietnam by Huynh Quang Nhuong

The Land of the Dragon

I used a coloring book about different historical periods in China to discuss the difference between the Ming and Qing dynasties.  The examples were from a Dover Publications coloring book and showed the Manchu and Mongol influence on the Qing clothing styles in culture (A precursor to the craziness in France a couple chapters later).

But on the other side of the world: American history was addressed by the following sources...

Guerber Story of the Thirteen Colonies:  Franklin, Washington, Ch. LV, Braddock’s Defeat,

Mara L. Pratt. American History Stories - II (Kindle Locations 6-14). Heritage History.
Causes of the Revolution, The Stamp Act, Behavior of the Colonists, Daughters of Liberty, The Boston Boys, A Brave Little Girl, The Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea-Party, Revolutionary Tea, The Patriotic Barber, Battle of Lexington, Paul Revere's Ride, Yankee Doodle, The Women at Lexington, Capture of Ticonderoga, Battle of Bunker Hill, General Warren, The March to Quebec, Washington and His Army, The Red-coats Leave Boston, Declaration of Independence

Withrow, Brandon; Withrow, Mindy (2007-11-01). Hearts and Hands (History Lives) (Kindle Locations 16-19). Christian Focus Publications. Kindle Edition.
Awakening Church Timeline, What was the Awakening Church? Jonathan Edwards: An inward sweet sense, Johann Sebastian Bach:Soli Deo Gloria, The Development of Church Music, John Wesley: My heart strangely warmed

CHESTER COMIX:  VIRGINIA GEOGRAPHY Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle I created from the teacher guides on the website that are very helpful in discussing both the physical land characteristics of Virginia (a site for Revolutionary and Civil War battles) AND the cultural historical-geography of the area.

Practical Changes in Art

As much as I love using the "open-and-go" formula in Artistic Pursuits, it was fun to transition to a different medium, that is pastels, from the pencils we'd used in the first half of this year.  The Mommy, however, didn't pay close enough attention to the materials needed to accomplish the change and didn't have the CHALK PASTELS.  My 3Gs did persevere, with the oil pastel crayons at hand, and created "a path to the beach" from directions in A Simple Start in Chalk Pastels.  I did subsequently pick up the needed materials last night, and we'll continue to post more of their work going forward (cheers from the Grandparent section of the blog auditorium).  The work above is done by G1 who adores TobyMac and shows that in his December pencil sketch.
